Malt Loaf
A review of malt loaf may sound like a completely stupid idea but proper nutrition is essential to your performance and airsoft is no exception. Eating properly before, during and after an airsoft event can have an amazingly beneficial effect on your enjoyment of it. The Department of Health recommends that men consume 2500 calories and women 2000 calories per day, yet the dehydrated MOD 24 hour rations contain 4300 calories. The probable reason for this is that exercise will burn up the calories, for example hill walking uses 2.5 times the calories of walking over level ground. Simply eating more food is one way to combat this and maintain the energy to last a whole day at Spartan, however the hidden cost of this is not so obvious. Milsim events tend to last for extended periods of time and players are expected to carry their food with them. As the weight of your kit goes up so does the energy requirement to carry it. Lighter, energy dense foods are therefore one way of lightening the load.
Most sport nutrition experts agree that your diet should contain around 60% carbohydrates, 20% protein, and 20% fat. The bulk of the energy that you’ll be using up during a game will be carbohydrates and there are two varieties, simple (i.e. sugars) and complex (i.e. starches). Whilst fat also provides energy, it takes longer to digest and slows the absorption of carbohydrates. You should aim for a mix of carbohydrates as you will be needing the energy immediately but will also want to avoid the immediate energy (sugar) rush followed by the inevitable crash.
Malt loaf offers a perfect solution to the problems presented by long airsoft games. For every 100g of malt loaf you get; 310 kcal, 7.4g of protein, 65.6g of carbohydrates (of which 22.5g are sugars), and only 2g of fat (of which 1.1g are saturated). The best bit about it is that it tastes the same if you’ve been sitting on it all day and its squashed to half its original size. It also fits ammo pouches perfectly.
